Golden Knights splits with Vincennes
CARROLLTON, Ga. – The West Georgia Tech baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Vincennes University (Ind.) Saturday afternoon winning the first game 5-2 before dropping the nightcap 3-1.
West Georgia Tech moved their record to 3-1 on the young season. Vincennes was playing its first games of the year.
A rubber match was scheduled for Sunday but heavy rains in the Douglasville area Saturday night left too much water on the field, forcing the game’s cancellation.
In West Georgia Tech’s game one win, Sean Watson went 2-for-3 and Blake Butcher was 2-for-2 with two RBIs to lead the Knights at the plate.
Kyle Peals, in his pitching debut for the Golden Knights, went the distance allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out five over seven innings to earn the win.
He pitched out of a jam in the top of the second with West Georgia Tech leading 3-0. Peals had runners on second and third with no one out but then struck out the side to preserve the three-run lead.
West Georgia Tech stretched its lead to 4-0 with a run in the fourth. The Trailblazers scored two in the fifth to close the gap to 4-2, but West Georgia Tech responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Peals retired the side in the final two innings to seal the victory.
Vincennes spoiled another solid outing by a West Georgia Tech pitcher to win game two 3-1. Chris Irwin, also starting his first career game for the Golden Knights, went the distance and allowed just five hits and two earned runs over seven innings. He struck out a WGTC season-best 10 best batters in the effort but picked up the hard-luck loss.
The Golden Knights failed to get anything going offensively, as they were shut out the rest of the way after taking a 1-0 first-inning lead. VU tied the game in the fourth and scored the winning runs in the seventh.
The Golden Knights will hit the road for the first time this season starting a short road-swing Wednesday in LaGrange against LaGrange College’s junior varsity squad. The doubleheader will get underway at 3 p.m. West Georgia Tech will then travel to Snead State Saturday for a doubleheader in Boaz, Ala.
