Darton State beats Gulf Coast 6-3

ALBANY – Darton State College beat Gulf Coast 6-3, today at home.

The win improved Darton to 12-7. Gulf Coast (Panama City, Fla.) fell to 11-7.

"It was a great win for our program against the best team we have played all year," Darton State College head baseball coach Scot Hemmings said. "We played our most complete game."

Colton Thomas, a freshman from Prattville, Ala., led at the plate today with three hits. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the second and fifth innings.

Freshman Taylor Ferringer, of Macon, was in control on the hill. Gulf Coast managed just two hits off of the Cavaliers' pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out one during his three innings of work.

Trey Johnson recorded the win for Cavaliers. He allowed three runs over five innings. Johnson struck out one, walked one and gave up six hits. Then TJ Roberts, a local Lee County closer, put away the final three outs to record the save.

Matt Foster took the loss for Gulf Coast. He lasted just six innings, walked one, struck out two, and allowed five runs.

Darton never trailed after scoring two runs in the first on a fielder's choice and an RBI single by sophomore Luis Salas. Darton scored two more in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead, but Gulf Coast closed the deficit by pushing three runs in the top of the fifth. A sacrifice fly by Matt Bartlett, an RBI double by Trevor Davis, and an RBI single by christian Williams fueled Gulf Coast's comeback.

Johnson put an end to their attempt at a comeback to close the inning.

After posting one run in the fifth on an RBI single by Max Thomas to go up 5-3, the Cavaliers again scored one more in the eighth.

"I am proud of our guys and the way they performed today," Hemmings said. "We just need to carry this into the series with a very talented Gordon team."

Darton will travel to Gordon College on Tuesday, and then hosts Gordon at 5 p.m.Wednesday.
