OXFORD, Georgia – The West Georgia Tech men’s basketball team won its third-consecutive Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association – Region 17 Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship, 64-56 over Oxford College of Emory University Sunday afternoon in Oxford, Ga.
West Georgia Tech has now won three-straight Region 17 Tournament titles despite never winning the regular season championship outright.
West Georgia Tech had a 13 point lead with 8:34 to play but Oxford went on a 13-2 run to get to within two, 56-54, with 3:01 remaining. The Golden Knights then scored on two-straight possessions to stretch the lead back out to six, 60-54 with 1:01 to play. Oxford would get no closer than that.
WGTC dominated the glass, outrebounding the Eagles 50-36.
WGTC and Oxford will represent Region 17 and will be joined by the champions of Region 10 and Region 20. The winner of next weekend’s tournament will secure one of the eight spots in the NJCAA D-III Men’s Basketball Elite 8 National Championship Tournament in upstate New York.
