West Georgia Technical splits with Denmark Tech
WEST GEORGIA TECH SPLITS WITH DENMARK TECH MONDAY; MEN WIN 104-94 WHILE WOMEN FALL 80-59
CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Georgia Tech split a pair of games with NJCAA Division 1-member Denmark Tech (S.C.) Monday evening. The men won a shootout 104-94, and the women lost 80-59.
WGTC Men 104, Denmark Tech 94
Alyja Hennings scored 29 points and Victor Wynn added 20 as the Golden Knights men’s team outscored Denmark Tech 104-94 to win its third-straight game.
WGTC improved to 9-10 overall and remain 2-1 in conference play.
The win gives the Golden Knights a season sweep over Denmark Tech as they won the previous encounter 109-105 back on December 6 in Bamberg, S.C.
The Golden Knights shot 49 percent from the field. They had their best three-point shooting night of the season, connecting on 10-of-16 from beyond the arc (63 percent).
Hennings scored his 29 points on 9-of-14 shooting (3-of-5 from 3-point range). He also pulled down 12 rebounds to record a double-double.
Wynn was 4-of-8 from the field and was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.
Derrick Austin and Radazerro Chaney each scored 13 points and Shaun Monk contributed 12 points to round out the double-figure scoring for West Georgia Tech.
Melvin Mitchell scored a game-high 39 points for Denmark Tech which included 9-of-21 shooting from three-point range.
The Golden Knights now look forward to a huge weekend which includes a rematch with Middle Georgia Tech in Warner Robins on Friday before coming home to host Oxford in Tallapoosa on Saturday. The Knights are currently tied with Middle Georgia Tech at 2-1 in the conference, a half-game behind Southern Crescent Tech which is 3-1. Oxford is 1-0 and atop the standings.
Friday’s game in Warner Robins will tip at 7:30 pm while Saturday’s game will start at 5 p.m., at the Haralson County High School gymnasium.
Denmark Tech 80, WGTC 59
Denmark Tech, which came in to the game with a 10-1 record, knocked of the West Georgia Tech women 80-59 Monday evening.
Sharika Pennamon led the Knights with 15 points while Victoria Conner and Jasmine Williams added eight points, each.
The Golden Knights shot 33 percent from the field. The Knights outrebounded Denmark Tech 54-47 but committed 38 turnovers while forcing 23.
West Georgia Tech is in second place in the conference with a 2-1 record, behind Georgia Northwestern, who is 4-0.
The Golden Knights return to action next Friday at Middle Georgia Tech in Warner Robins. Tip-time is 5:30 p.m.
