ALBANY – Five Darton State College sophomore wrestlers signed commitments to university programs today at a signing ceremony in the Athletics Department lobby at Darton.
Bryce Carr, the 2015 NJCAA 165 lb. national champion, signed with NCAA D-1 program University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
2015 NJCAA national qualifiers Sean Nguyen, Brandon Weber, Matt Carroll and Sammy Rosario all signed with Cumberland University, whose strong wrestling program finished 9th in the NAIA this season.
Darton State College head wrestling coach James Hicks said he's proud of Carr, whose hard work and talent led to his accomplishment as a D-1 transfer, and he's equally pleased about his other sophomores signing with Cumberland, which is were Hicks will begin a new career as head wrestling coach beginning late this spring.
"They'll help me bring some stability, leadership and familiarity with my coaching style to Cumberland," Hicks said. "I'm looking forward to them helping improve the culture and team cohesiveness there."
Several of this class of sophomores can reflect upon accomplishments at Darton that included two consecutive District Wrestling Championship titles. Nguyen, Carr and Carroll all won individual District titles within their weight classes. These sophomores played a major role in pushing Darton to a program-best 14th place finish at the 2015 NJCAA National Wrestling Championship.
