GPC’s Garrett posts 15th double-double, has a triple-double
Sophomore forward Ronita Garrett has been seeing double this season. In fact she’s seen double-double and even triple-double for Georgia Perimeter College in its uncharacteristically rocky 2012-13 campaign.
The six-foot sophomore turned in her 15th double-double of the season Saturday, scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds as the Jaguars defeated Andrew College 80-51 in Cuthbert.
That total could be counted as 14 double-doubles because one was a rare basketball feat, a triple-double on January 17 when the Jaguars fell 65-61 to visiting Chattahoochee Tech.
Garrett scored scored 28 points against the Golden Eagles, nearly half of the Jaguars’ total. She dominated the glass with 13 rebounds and grabbed 10 of her team’s 14 steals. She nailed six of nine 3-point attempts.
“That’s the first triple-double since I’ve been here as the coach,” said James Waldon, who is in his 16th season as the GPC head coach. “Ronita has been doing a tremendous job for us. She’s a very hard worker.”
Garrett leads the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association in scoring with 19.9 points per game, which ranks her ninth in the NJCAA.
She’s sixth in the NJCAA in rebounds, averaging 12.5. In Region 17 that’s second only to South Georgia Tech’s Nikkei Blackburn, who averages 13.7 per game—third in the nation.
Garrett’s high game was 31 points in a 65-50 victory at Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College, but a favorite for her has to be when she scored only 11 but snagged 16 rebounds in the Jaguars’ 61-54 upset of Darton State College on Dec. 8.
She forms a powerful one-two-punch with sophomore guard Larissa Stafford, who is averaging 14.5 points, 10th in the league.
But the Jaguars, decimated by personnel losses, are languishing at 7-6 in the GCAA and 11-10 overall. They statistically remain in the hunt for a home-court date in the first round of the conference playoffs on Feb. 26, but face league leaders in each of their next four outings.
