SGTC's Daniels signs with Young Harris
SGTC’s Shaquaya Daniels signs letter to play at
Young Harris
South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets point guard Shaquaya
Daniels, a 5’1” sophomore from New York, N.Y., has
signed a letter of intent to play basketball with the Young Harris
Mountain Lions for the 2013 – 2014 basketball season. Young
Harris plays a NCAA Division II schedule in the Peach Belt
Conference.
Daniels was ranked number one in assists in the National Junior
College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) women’s
basketball standings this season and also earned recognition as a
member of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association’s
(GCAA) All-Tournament team for her outstanding play in the NJCAA
Region 17 tournament.
“I was really proud of her season,” said South Georgia
Technical College Lady Jets head basketball coach James Frey.
“She was our unquestionable leader all year. I am very
excited that she will be able to continue her basketball career and
play at the next level.”
Daniels averaged 10.5 assists per game over 31 games this season.
She was also ranked in the top 15 in the nation in steals. She
averaged 3.7 steals per game for the Lady Jets, 6.6 rebounds per
contest and 6.4 points each game.
During the GCAA Tournament, Daniels posted 12 points and 12
assists against the NJCAA’s 11th ranked Darton State College
Lady Cavaliers in the semi-final GCAA tournament game. Daniels also
had five points, 12 assists, and five steals in the Lady
Jet’s 76 – 67 quarter-final victory over Georgia
Highlands in Rome.
Daniels helped lead the Lady Jets and first year head coach James
Frey to a 20 – 12 overall record and a 13 – 9
performance in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association for the
2012-2013 season. The Lady Jets finished in the final four in the
GCAA conference playoffs.
The Young Harris Lady Mountain Lions were 13 – 13 last
season under head coach Brenda Paul. Randy Dunn is the athletic
director at Young Harris.
